What keywords are you using to attract the search engines?  A keyword is very important when it comes to building sites that a search engine would love.  The keywords that you target on your website will make the difference as to what will bring you more traffic and what will not.  It will also determine how easy it is to rank.So how can I know what keywords to look for?  Well start by picking a niche or a subject around which you want to make your website. Then think of search engine keywords or keywords that people will type on a search engine relating to your website’s subject. Is that too hard?

Well it gets easier

You can use a tool from google itself to help you in this regard.  You can use Googles keyword tool. This tool gives you related keywords as well as the estimated search volume of that keyword for a month on google.  This helps you to know which keywords to target for. But just for starters it is generally easier to rank for longer keywords.

We will touch more on keyword research later on.

It has been proven that you want quality links and this is a lot better than the quantity of links.  So by all means avoid any software that promises you a lot of backlinks in small amount of time.  These software do more harm than good.  Google likes links that look natural and not automated.  Think of it would a brand new website get 1000 backlinks to them in one day.  This doesn’t seem logical.  This would affect your rankings.  No rankings equal no traffic which equals no money.

Avoid links from pages that already have a lot of spam.  You may try to get links from another blog or a guestbook; however if you see that page already has a lot of links from other people that seems to be looking like spam links, you should not post your link there.  You can post 10,000 of these links and get little real value to your website and guess what no money.

Avoid posting on simple blogs that are not related to your site

You want to get links from sites that are related to yours.  If you site is about how to make money from the internet, then backlinks from sites about dog food will do you no good.  The links that you get should be relevant to your site.  So if your site is about dog food then links from related sites such as dog training or types of dogs will be good.

Getting links from authority sites is how you can make real money on the internet

So what are authority sites ?  Well authority sites are sites that have been around the internet for a while; they have aged and hold high value to the search engines. These can also relate to sites from fortune 500 companies that hold large respect in the internet world.  You can think of companies such as Adobe or Dell.  How about big names like CNN.  One link from one of these sites can give you a massive boost.  Ok so now you have it! So go out and get good backlinks to make some real money.

You might be wondering how you can get a link from these big sites? Examine them be creative! I will tell you a strategy on how you can do that a bit later but you have to continue reading this blog. Off page SEO is things that you do to promote your site outside the pages of your main site. Most times it involves primarily backlinks pointing to your site from external sites.

Now how do you go about getting these links and why are they so important?  Well a link to your site is like a vote saying to the search engines that I found this site valuable.  So this increases its value in the search engine positions.  Ok good but how do I get another site to link to me? Well this is where having good content is key.  If you provide a good value to the users and somebody actually likes what they read then you will get a link.

But you might say then how do they get to my site in the first place if I don’t have any backlinks to begin with. Kinda like which one comes first; the chicken or the egg.  However, don’t fear there are other ways that you can get those coveted backlinks to your money site.

Do not do link exchanges! Google hates those.

First stay away from any reciprocal links and link exchanges.  These actually decrease the value of your site.  What you are interested in is one way backlinks to your site.

Things you can do to get one way links back to your site:

• Write an article and submit it to article directories.  There are thousands of article directories on the internet.  You can write an article on a subject that relates to your website and submit it to one of these article directories and then if they accept it then you have an opportunity to include a link to your website at the bottom of your article. So from one article you can have hundreds of backlinks pointing to your site.
• Blog commenting. You can search out blogs on the internet in a similar niche as yours and then leave a comment on their site if it adds value to their discussion.  You then have an opportunity to leave a link to your website.  Do not leave comment spam!
• Forum posting.  In most forums, you have an opportunity to leave a signature at the bottom of your post.  You can include a link to your website in these forums. Again make sure that what you post is legitimate and adds to the content and discussion of the forum. Do not forum spam!

Now these are just a few ways to get some coveted backlinks. We will be tackling some other strategies later on.  Now most important, the text that you use for your backlinks should correspond to the keywords that you want to rank for.

Now there are many tutorials online on the best way to do SEO.  I am going to offer some general tips and guidelines that I use.  Before we start, understand that there are two types of SEO- on page and off page seo.  On page SEO refers to SEO on your site and off page seo refers to SEO on external sites.  For the purpose of this post we will be dealing with on page SEO.

Well the first thing that you want to do when doing SEO is figure; what keywords or phrases that I want to rank for.  You should try to rank for 2 or 3 keywords per page.  Anything more than that will get ignored and/or you will not be able to do it effectively.

Now what do search engines look for.  Well first that comes to mind is keyword density.  you want to be able to use your keyword throughout your content, but don’t over do it.   Do not stuff you page with your keywords numerous times.  That will only label you page as spam.  But you also want to use your keyword throughout your content as natural as possible. This website is optimized for the “make money on the internet” keyword because let’s face it thats why you are here.  You want to find out how you can make money on the internet.  Anyway back to SEO.  Also your content should be at least 250 words and you should try to put your keywords early in the text as well as throughout.

Now a few places where it is absolutely necessary to put your keywords.

Title tags

The title of your page usually comes between <title> </title> tags.  Most blogs do this automatically.  You can check your page source code to make sure. It is important that your main keyword or keyword phrase appears in your title.

Heading tags

Heading tags helps to sectionize our content.  We have main headings and sub headings. Main headings usually come between <h1> </h1> tags. In this area, your main keywords should appear also.  We also have secondary headings appearing between <h2> </h2> tags  or h3, h4, h5, h6 tags.  You should have your secondary keywords come in between these tags.

Meta tags

You should also have meta tags in your html content. Meta tags help the search engine enter data about your site in the listings.  The two most important meta tags are:

• <meta name=”description” content=”This contains a description of your site.”>
• <meta name=”keywords” content=”main keyword, sub keywords”>

Ok, so this is a good overall primer for SEO; this should begin to help you in the search engine listing.  This helps the search engines better categorize your content as well as provide information about your listings.  Don’t worry you will be making money on the internet in no time.

Paid traffic

Paid traffic is traffic that comes simply from paying for it. Many individuals use this as a first means to get traffic to their site since a new site may be relatively unknown.  This is the hardest of all traffic sources to make a viable income from, especially from an ordinary blog since you may spend a little bit of money for each visitor and you may never get any return on that investment from them.  Of course there are ways that you can make it big with Paid traffic; we have a few tips and tricks that we will be sharing over the next set of posts.  The advantage is that you don’t have to wait to begin getting visitors.  Sources for paid traffic are:

• Pay per Click programs such as Google Adwords
• Buying hits to your sites.  There are various programs that you can buy 10,000 hits for $20.00

The difficulty is how you make money with these traffic sources.

Natural search engine traffic

Search engine traffic is one of the best free methods to get traffic.  But how do you get your site to rank amongst the millions that are on the internet.  This is essential to make money on the internet.  To get your site to rank requires Search Engine Optimization called SEO for short. We will be focusing a lot on this.  You need to know this and you need to do it well. We will be giving tips.

Referral traffic

Referral traffic comes from others recommending your site by perhaps telling somebody else or linking to it from their own site.  You can also do this through social sites such as Myspace and Facebook. You can tell your friends and then in turn they tell their friends.

Ok so how do i get it on the world wide web.  That’s the question we all want answered.  Well that and how to make your own website. Well today it is far easier than ever to make a website. In times past you had to know html but whilst it is a good skill to have; its not completely necessary to build a website.  There are many platforms today that make it easy to build your own websites.  There are content management systems like Joomla or Drupal that make it easy to build websites.  Then their are blogging platforms like blogger and wordpress.  You can look anyone of these up to find out more information.  You can also take the old fashion route and use html but this will take longer to learn and will require more dedication.  But html is a good skill to learn in the web building world since even in the content management systems sometimes you might need to edit the direct source code.

One that I personally like is wordpress.  This site is built on wordpress.   It is simple and easy to use and their are many different templates you can use to change the look of your site.  There are also a lot of plugins available to use.  You can visit wordpress.org to get more information.

Ok so I have a site how do I use that to make money?  Well there are lots of ways to monetize a site.  We will touch on each of these ways in detail later.  But here are a few:

• Google adsense ads
• Banners
• Affiliate marketing( selling other peoples products)

• Intext ads such as Infolinks or Adbrite
